Food Adventure Friday #11 Playing with our Food!
20 January 2012
While cleaning out my pantry, I found some pasta that had been in there for quite a while. I was inspired by a post that Lovely Fluffy Mama linked up last week, using pasta for play. I hoped it might inspire my kids to eat some different grains.
I had a very small amount of ABC pasta left in a box so I added a variety of other small grains to the mix and let them play with some dry pasta and grains while I cooked the other noodles.
About a year ago, I bought Soba noodles (made with Buckwheat flour). I don't remember what I used it for, but I do remember that it wasn't well received and, now, a year later it was still sitting in my pantry and I really didn't know what to do with it. So... I decided to cook it and let the kids play with it.
After cooking it, I tossed it with a little bit of oil and gave each kid some to play with on a plastic tray.
Immediately, they asked, can we eat it? I said, "Of course," and then they ended up eating nearly all of the noodles while they played!! My older son ate all of his and then asked, "Can I have more, just to play with?" I said, "Sure," gave him more and then he proceeded to eat that too!
If you are trying to get your kids to try whole grain pasta, I encourage you to try letting them play with it... it just may do the trick!
Besides by usual link-ups (see sidebar) This is Linked up to: Pantry Challenge, Week 3
