A Well Balanced Lunch

18 January 2012

In my last post, Teach Your Children About Balanced Eating, I shared a "Well Balanced Report Card," that I created.

I try to balance my kid's meals, but in order for them learn to be good eaters, they need to understand these choices in order to learn how to balance their meals themselves.

The report card is my way of helping them to learn this concept.

This morning, before my daughter left for school, I showed her the report card and we looked at her lunch together to determine how the foods fit into the various categories:

Fruit: Blueberries
Vegetables: Salad (we ran out of time and couldn't list the individual veggies)
Protein: Salmon (to add to her salad), Cheese
Whole Grains: Tortilla "snowflakes" (idea from Toys in the Dryer) with cinnamon and coconut sugar.

My daughter was really excited about doing this and was excited to see that she could put something in each category (except "treats") for her lunch.

  3. Oh good! I'm so glad that you've found it to be helpful. Let me know if it doesn't download or print properly- I'm still new to sharing PDFs.

  4. This is a good idea! We have a food guide chart at the table and every meal we say which group each of our foods fit into, but this takes it a step higher to give the entire day's perspective. Love it!

  6. Love the eating report card. My son has learned that we balance out his meals and if he is hungry at lunch he will say - Mom I haven't had dairy, can I have string cheese =-) Thanks for linking up to TGIF! Have a great week,
    Beth =-)

    1. It's wonderful that your son is able to recognize what he needs at such a young age!
