Link Up! Food Adventure Friday-Week 1

03 November 2011

Our Weekly "Adventures" at the "Healthy Food Store"

About a year ago, I realized a few things: 1. My kids eat a lot of apples.  2.  My kids eat the skin on the apples.  3. Apples are one of the "Dirty Dozen," in terms of pesticides.

Besides just buying conventional apples out of habit, I hadn't been buying organic apples for two main reasons: price, and the fact that the organic apples at the grocery stores didn't seem to be fresh and I like my apples crunchy!

I decided to check out the local natural market.  I discovered that their apples were not only fresh, but were also typically priced cheaper than the conventional apples at grocery store!  I was sold, and my family's weekly Monday outings to the "Healthy Food Store," began.

Every Monday we stop in and buy apples and whatever else catches my eye, is on sale, or that my boys beg me for on that particular day.

The boys love our weekly "Adventures" at the "Healthy Food Store," and have developed relationships with the people who work at the store.  Because of this, they are developing a very positive association with "healthy food."

A few weeks ago, on our weekly outing, my oldest son begged (yes, begged) for broccoli.  After I agreed to buy it, he said, "Can we eat it when we get home."  Again, I agreed (I mean, what mom would say, "No," to broccoli right?)

I figured that I would cut some up for a snack and serve the rest with dinner. However, my son had other plans (his enthusiasm should have been a clue!)  After washing the broccoli, I got out the knife to begin cutting some florets when my son shouted, "Don't cut it! We want to eat it like that!"  "What do you mean?" I asked.  "We want to eat the whole thing!"

And thus- "Broccoli Pops" were born.  They each ate an entire head of broccoli and were so proud. They couldn't wait until the next Monday when they could tell their friends at the "Healthy Food Store," about their special treat.

Now, it's your turn. I want to hear about your, "Food Adventures!" If you have a blog, please link-up. If not, I'd love to hear about your adventures in the comments.
