Try a New Food Tuesday #3- Kale Chips

17 January 2012

I've been hearing (reading) about Kale Chips for quite a while. I liked the concept and wanted to try them, but found it hard to believe that they were really as good as people said. But I finally decided to go for it!

The kids had a blast helping me make them.

First they helped to pull the leaves from the hard inner "stem," and then put them on a baking tray.

We then sprayed them with olive oil.

Then...because of my "doubt," I ended up making one critical error. I added WAY too much salt.

Before the kale was cooked it seemed really thick and dense... I mistakenly believed that they would need a good sprinkling of salt to get the desired taste.

(We cooked these for @15 minutes at 350 degrees--- they will get crunchy so wait until they do!)

The verdict was that these WOULD have been awesome- if not for the salt. My daughter still ate all of the "chips" on her plate but pulled a face with each one... It was if we all so desperately just wanted to turn back the clock and remove the salt- because other than that- they were really good!

I will definitely be buying more kale in my next shopping trip and trying these again soon!

My son also loved munching on it raw and plain... (he may be part rabbit!)

  1. So funny. I just bought Kale to make chips today. I've not done it before. Thanks for the tip on salt.

  2. I've heard about these before, but never had the guts to try them. At least now I know to lay off the salt when I decide to give it a try!

    1. Heather, I completely understand! I don't know why I didn't have the "guts," to try them for a while either, but I'm certainly glad that I finally did!

  3. We love making and eating kale chips. My kiddo get so excited about using the salad spinner to dry the kale.

    1. I'm so glad that I finally tried them. I don't actually have a salad spinner right now (not sure what happened to my old one). But after trying to dry the kale with paper towels, I'm thinking I need to invest in a new one and I'm sure that my kids would also enjoy using the spinner!! (More playing with food fun!!)
