What the Baby Ate Wednesday- Week 2

08 August 2012

After a few days of sweet potatoes, we introduced one of my favorite foods- avocados!

Avocados make a great first food for a number of health reasons, but my favorite reason is that they are SO EASY!

I'm a little lazy when it comes to baby food. I'm not really a "making my own baby food" kinda mom. To be honest, it's just a little more pre-planning than I'm up to.

Typically, I don't think about feeding the baby until it's time to feed the baby- so, as long as I have a ripe avocado on hand, I have instant baby food!!

I was worried that he was getting a little constipated after several days of avocado, so I also wanted to introduce pears. There weren't any organic pears at Whole Foods and I no longer live close to my favorite "Healthy Food Store," so I bought a few jars of Earth's Best pears.

Today the baby ate one meal which wasn't until 4:30 (busy day!) and it was avocado (raw, mashed, cold) and pears (about 1/3 jar). (FYI notice the seed still in the avocado? If you want to keep the avocado for a few days keep the seed it and it will keep it from getting brown.)

Do you make your own baby food? What do you like/ not like about it? What are your favorite quick and easy "go to" foods for babies?

  1. Funny I did a post about what my baby ate today too! Although my little guy is almost 15 months now. I remember the puree stage and luckily he moved on pretty fast. I did make all his food and still make the majority of it. Once he moved onto finger foods it got a lot easier to make and freeze stuff. I have quite a few baby friendly recipes on my blog for when your little one is at the finger food stage :-) http://ahealthyhappyhome.wordpress.com/

    1. Thanks for sharing your link Giselle. You have a lot of great recipes that I'd like to try. I'm pretty much not a fan of "baby food" in general and try to move on to finger food as soon as possible. Though I love the idea of making a bunch of baby food and having it ready to go in the freezer, this is child number 4 and I haven't done it yet :) Usually, I just end up adapting whatever we're eating for the baby which is certainly more difficult at this stage!

  2. I had always planned to make H's purees at home, but she ended up going straight to finger foods and it's been so much fun! You should join in on today's #munchkinmeals link up. It's a great way to share and get new ideas for your little one:) www.ahealthysliceoflife.com

    1. Thanks Brittany, I'll check out the link-up! I always try to go to finger foods as soon as I can... I don't think he's ready yet, but believe me, I'll be happy when he is! How old was "H" when you started finger foods? What did you start with? For my other kiddos, I think I started around 8 months and by then I felt confident enough to introduce a variety of foods- right now, I'm still a little cautious and this little guy seems to have a touchy stomach (he gets gassy/ colicky if I'm not very careful about what I eat and he spit up a bunch when I gave him pears so now I'm backing off on that too!)

  3. With my first I said aside a day and steamed and pureed tons of fruits and vegetables, but now with three little ones that doesn't happen anymore. :) Now when we have leftover vegetables from dinner I put them in the blender to puree them, and if it's more than I think the baby will eat in a day or two I put the extra into an ice cube tray in the freezer and then I have individual portions I can pull out to thaw later. (After it's frozen I take it out of the ice cube tray and put the little blocks into a freezer bag for storage.)

    1. Great ideas Abby! Yes, with multiple little ones there seems to be a quite a few things that just "don't happen anymore!"

  4. I so hope my future children are better eaters than I am - I'm 25 and still can't do avocadoes. I did make some progress recently and discovered I'm not as terrified of tomatoes as I thought I was though I still don't care much for them. I have always loved pears though! I remember being in elementary school and picking out the peaches and pears in the fruit salad concoction that they served at lunch because they were only things I liked!
